When the Light Comes On
UNSHAKABLE – WEEK 2
WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON
What happens when God’s truth reveals what’s really in our lives?
Main Scripture: Luke 8:16-18 (CSB)
16 “No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light.”
17 “For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light.”
18 “Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
INTRODUCTION – WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON?
Have you ever walked into a room that looked perfectly clean until the sunlight came through the window? Suddenly, you could see dust floating in the air and dirt in places you hadn’t noticed before. The sunlight didn’t create the dirt. It simply revealed what was already there.
The same thing happens when we allow God’s Word to shine into our lives. It reveals things we may have overlooked, ignored, or deliberately kept hidden. We may look like we have everything together on the outside, but God knows what’s really happening on the inside.
If we’re going to become unshakable, we must be willing to let God’s light reveal the things in our lives that need to change.
TAKEAWAY 1 – ALLOW GOD’S LIGHT TO EXAMINE YOUR LIFE
Luke 8:16 – The lamp is meant to give light.
Bible Notes:
Jesus uses the illustration of a lamp to remind us that light is meant to be seen, not hidden. Just as light reveals what is in a room, God’s Word reveals the attitudes, motives, and areas of our lives that need attention. Psalm 139:23-24 reminds us of David’s prayer asking God to search his heart and reveal anything that needs correcting. Becoming unshakable begins with allowing God’s truth to examine every part of our lives.
Application:
Ask God to search your heart and reveal anything that is keeping you from becoming the person He wants you to be.
Key Thought:
We cannot change what we refuse to allow God to reveal.
TAKEAWAY 2 – CONFESS WHAT GOD BRINGS TO LIGHT
Luke 8:17 – What is hidden will be revealed.
Bible Notes:
Jesus reminds us that what is hidden will eventually be brought to light. While His immediate teaching concerns the revelation of God’s truth, it also reminds us that nothing in our lives is hidden from God. When His Word reveals sin, our response should be confession rather than excuses or denial. First John 1:9 reminds us that God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us when we confess our sins. God’s conviction is intended to lead us toward repentance and restoration, not leave us living in shame.
Application:
When God reveals sin, stop making excuses, confess it, seek His forgiveness, and take the necessary steps to make things right.
Key Thought:
Confession isn’t telling God something He doesn’t know; it’s agreeing with Him about what He has already revealed.
TAKEAWAY 3 – LIVE ACCORDING TO THE TRUTH GOD HAS REVEALED
Luke 8:18 – Pay attention to how you listen.
Bible Notes:
Jesus concludes by warning His listeners to pay attention to how they receive God’s Word. Hearing the truth isn’t enough; we must respond to it. James 1:22 reminds us to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. Spiritual growth happens when we allow God’s truth to change our attitudes, priorities, decisions, and actions. An unshakable life develops through consistent faith and obedience to what God has revealed.
Jesus is telling us to be careful how we listen to God’s Word. It’s not enough to just hear what God says. We need to understand it, believe it, and do something with it.
Jesus also says that those who receive His truth will be given more, but those who don’t respond can lose even what they think they understand. The more we listen to God and put His Word into practice, the more we grow in our understanding of Him. But when we continually ignore what God tells us, our hearts can become less willing to listen.
Application:
Take the steps necessary to change what God has revealed, allowing His Word to shape your attitudes, priorities, decisions, and actions.
Key Thought:
God doesn’t just want us to hear His Word; He wants His Word to change the way we live.
CLOSING – LET THE LIGHT COME ON
I would bring all three takeaways together with this statement:
“If we’re going to become unshakable, we must let God examine our hearts, confess what needs to be confessed, and make the changes He’s calling us to make.”
